The aim of this project is to design an Iconic Pedestrian Bridge in the Heart of Amsterdam. The Architecture of this new structure is to reflect contemporary design tendencies.

The proposal not only attends to the specific function but also takes into consideration the urban insertion and impact geared towards creating a new Architectural symbol for an European capital city.

This project hopes to achieve the following:

  • To stimulate the context by sculpting a form derived from the abstraction of an action.
  • Research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of esigning an original footbridge.
  • To generate the discussion of ideas regarding the functionality of bridges in relation with art and sculpture.

Public infrastructure, conventionally is seen as an Architecture with Singular programme, i.e, a bridge serves only to connect two points that are divided by a river, road etc., The proposed concept is to explore the Architectural potential by developing manifold programmes other than the purpose it conventionally serves. Bridge attempts to bridge public by creating more interaction spaces (in the form of extension of landscape, creating balconies etc., therefore becoming an active Entertainment/ relaxation space rather than serve to connect to platforms alone.

The Concept for the form is an attempt to convert the abstraction of an action and convert it to a form with a certain Aesthetic and an expressive quality that the Hermitage museum entrance requires. The Action in this case being, the flapping of a bird. As an experiment in the abstraction process a random action was chosen, but the action has potential to express energy dissipated, therefore an ability to transform the context. The Iconic nature of the form is an attempt to portray in an abstract way, this expressive behaviour. The Bridge runs for nearly 100 mts (Each arm Diagonally) in length and varies between 5.5 (the longer arm) and 4.5 (shorter arms).
